Tips to prepare the best Colombian coffee cup
So you’ve got some of our amazing Colombian beans in your hands, now let’s unlock their full potential! Here are our favorite tips to help you brew a cup that’s vibrant and balanced.
1. Start with Fresh, Good Water.
Coffee is 98% water, so the quality of your water makes a huge difference! If your tap water has a strong taste or odor, it will come through in your cup. For the cleanest, truest coffee flavor, we recommend using filtered or spring water. Think of it as giving your precious beans a pure canvas to shine on.
2. Grind Right Before You Brew.
This is the single biggest upgrade you can make to your coffee game! Whole bean coffee is a sealed vault of flavor and aroma. The moment you grind, those incredible compounds begin to oxidize. For the brightest, most fragrant cup, grind your beans just seconds before you brew. It makes all the difference.
3. Mind Your Measurements.
Scoops can be inconsistent because beans vary in size and density. For repeatable, cafe-quality results at home, use a simple kitchen scale. A great starting point is a 1:16 coffee-to-water ratio (e.g., 25 grams of coffee for 400 grams/ML of water). Tweak from there to match your personal taste: more coffee for a stronger cup, a little less for a lighter one.
4. Don’t Let It Sit on the Heat.
Colombian coffees often have lovely, delicate floral and fruity notes that are sensitive to heat. If you use a drip machine or French press, pour your brewed coffee into a pre-warmed thermos or carafe right away. Letting it sit on a hot plate will continue to "cook" the coffee, turning those bright flavors bitter and dull. Your future self will thank you for that piping hot, fresh-tasting second cup!
5. Clean Your Gear Regularly.
Coffee oils are delicious, but they go rancid over time and leave a stale, bitter residue in your equipment. Make it a habit to give your grinder, coffee maker, and French press a good, deep clean every few weeks (a simple mix of water and vinegar works wonders). You’ll be amazed at how much cleaner and brighter your daily brew tastes.
Most importantly? Have fun and experiment! These tips are your foundation. Try adjusting the grind size, water temperature, or brew time to discover your perfect version of that classic, smooth Colombian profile. Happy brewing!
